eSIM Germany: what you get
- Networks
- O2 5G, Vodafone 5G
- Speed
- Up to 5G where the network has it, 4G elsewhere
- Where your traffic comes out
- France, United Kingdom, or Netherlands, depending on the plan. Websites see you there, wherever you actually are; streaming catalogues and apps that check your location go by that address.
- After the daily allowance
- A Daily Unlimited pass slows to 500 Kbps, 512 Kbps, or 1 Mbps until the next day. It is never cut off. How daily passes work
- Top-ups
- Add data to the same eSIM later, with no new QR code. A Daily Unlimited pass is bought for its full number of days and cannot be extended.
- Buying ahead
- Install any time within 180 days of purchase. For most plans the days start counting on the first connection at the destination, not at checkout.
- Calls and SMS
- Data only, with no phone number. Call over a messenger; a service that verifies you by SMS cannot reach this eSIM.
Germany: the identity check a roaming eSIM skips, and the Funkloch
Germany does not sell an anonymous SIM. Since 2017 a prepaid card has to be tied to a verified identity before it works: a video call with an agent, your passport held up to the camera, or a visit to a post office. The call takes minutes when it goes well, but not every provider accepts every foreign document, and travellers do lose their first evening to it. A roaming eSIM is not a German line, and nobody checks anything.
The other thing Germans will tell you about is the Funkloch — the dead zone. By the regulator's 2025 figures about 2% of the country has no mobile broadband from anyone, and another 13% has it from some operators and not from others, so the network your phone is on may be the one that is missing. It is felt most on trains: an ICE crosses forest and tunnel, and the signal goes with them. Download what you need before boarding; the on-board Wi-Fi rides on the same networks.
The plan covers Germany. Switzerland is next door and outside the EU's roaming rules, which is worth remembering in Basel and around Lake Constance, and Austria and the other neighbours need a plan that names them. The eSIM carries data only, with no German number.
Which plan for which trip
Messengers and maps are light. Video, calls and a laptop on a hotspot are what use data up.
How to install it
- 01
Check your phone
It has to take an eSIM and must not be locked to a carrier. Does your phone support eSIM?
- 02
Scan the QR code
After payment the QR code is on your order page. Scan it in the phone's settings — at home, over Wi-Fi.
- 03
Switch it on when you land
Turn on data roaming for the esimker line. It finds the network by itself.

Frequently asked questions
› Do I have to verify my identity to use this eSIM?
No. The video identification is a rule for German prepaid SIMs. A roaming eSIM is not a German line and works as soon as it is installed.
› Will it work on ICE trains?
In the stations and on most of the route, yes. In tunnels and forest stretches expect it to drop, on this network or any other.
› Does it work in Switzerland or Austria?
No, it covers Germany. For a trip across the borders choose a Europe plan — Switzerland is outside the EU's roaming rules.
