eSIM China (incl. HK & Macao): what you get
- Networks
- 5 networks in 3 countries and regions — listed below
- Speed
- Up to 5G where the network has it, 4G elsewhere
- Where your traffic comes out
- Singapore. Websites see that address in every country of the plan. That is outside the mainland firewall, so the sites and apps blocked on Chinese networks open without a VPN.
- After the daily allowance
- A Daily Unlimited pass slows to 384 Kbps, 512 Kbps, or 1 Mbps until the next day. It is never cut off. How daily passes work
- Top-ups
- Add data to the same eSIM later, with no new QR code. A Daily Unlimited pass is bought for its full number of days and cannot be extended.
- Buying ahead
- Install any time within 180 days of purchase. For most plans the days start counting on the first connection at the destination, not at checkout.
- Calls and SMS
- Data only, with no phone number. Call over a messenger; a service that verifies you by SMS cannot reach this eSIM.
China: the firewall, and what a roaming eSIM changes
On a Chinese SIM or hotel Wi-Fi, Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube and most Western news sites do not open. This eSIM is a roaming line: its traffic leaves the mainland before it reaches the internet — the table above says where — so it is outside the mainland's filtering and those services work as they do at home, with no VPN to install and nothing to configure.
Two limits are worth knowing before you rely on it. A few companies do not serve every place themselves: ChatGPT and Claude, for example, are not offered in Hong Kong, so an eSIM that comes out there is refused by them for a reason that has nothing to do with China — check the exit in the table above. And Google Maps loads but is a poor guide on the mainland: its map is offset and thin. Use Apple Maps on an iPhone or Amap (Gaode), which has an English interface.
Paying is done by phone almost everywhere. Alipay and WeChat Pay both accept a foreign Visa or Mastercard now; set them up before you fly, while you can still receive your bank's confirmation SMS at home. A local Chinese SIM needs your passport and a visit to an operator's shop; the eSIM needs neither. It carries data only, with no Chinese number.
Which plan for which trip
Messengers and maps are light. Video, calls and a laptop on a hotspot are what use data up.
How to install it
- 01
Check your phone
It has to take an eSIM and must not be locked to a carrier. Does your phone support eSIM?
- 02
Scan the QR code
After payment the QR code is on your order page. Scan it in the phone's settings — at home, over Wi-Fi.
- 03
Switch it on when you land
Turn on data roaming for the esimker line. It finds the network by itself.

Frequently asked questions
› Do I need a VPN in China with this eSIM?
No. The traffic comes out outside mainland China, where the sites blocked on the mainland are not blocked.
› Will ChatGPT work?
It depends on where this eSIM comes out, which the table above shows. ChatGPT is not offered in Hong Kong, so through a Hong Kong exit it is refused; through other countries it works as usual.
› Does it cover Hong Kong and Macao too?
Yes — the plan works in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao, so one eSIM covers a trip across all three.
