eSIM India: what you get
- Networks
- AirTel 5G
- Speed
- Up to 5G where the network has it, 4G elsewhere
- Where your traffic comes out
- Singapore. Websites see you there, not in the country you are visiting; streaming catalogues and apps that check your location go by that address.
- After the daily allowance
- A Daily Unlimited pass slows to 384 Kbps, 512 Kbps, or 1 Mbps until the next day. It is never cut off. How daily passes work
- Top-ups
- Add data to the same eSIM later, with no new QR code. A Daily Unlimited pass is bought for its full number of days and cannot be extended.
- Buying ahead
- Install any time within 180 days of purchase. For most plans the days start counting on the first connection at the destination, not at checkout.
- Calls and SMS
- Data only, with no phone number. Call over a messenger; a service that verifies you by SMS cannot reach this eSIM.
India: the SIM counter you skip, and the Indian number you still lack
Getting an Indian SIM as a foreigner is a procedure. The shop wants your passport, your visa and an address in India, sometimes a photo and a local contact as well, and then you wait for the line to be activated — a few hours when it goes well, a day when it does not. The line lasts only as long as the visa. A roaming eSIM is working when the plane lands, and there is no counter.
What it does not give you is an Indian number, and India runs on one-time codes sent to Indian numbers. Food delivery, many ticket sites and UPI payments expect one. The railways are the exception worth knowing: IRCTC registers a foreign visitor with their own number and email for a small fee, 100 rupees plus tax. For the rest, Uber works with the account you already have, and a hotel desk will book what an app refuses to.
India switches off mobile internet district by district more often than any other democracy — 84 shutdowns in 2024 and 65 in 2025 by Access Now's count, most of them in Manipur, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. A shutdown turns off the local network itself, so a roaming eSIM goes dark with everyone else's; keep bookings offline if your route passes through such a region. Where the network is up, this eSIM's traffic leaves the country before it reaches the internet — the table above says where — so the apps India has banned, TikTok among them, generally open.
Which plan for which trip
Messengers and maps are light. Video, calls and a laptop on a hotspot are what use data up.
How to install it
- 01
Check your phone
It has to take an eSIM and must not be locked to a carrier. Does your phone support eSIM?
- 02
Scan the QR code
After payment the QR code is on your order page. Scan it in the phone's settings — at home, over Wi-Fi.
- 03
Switch it on when you land
Turn on data roaming for the esimker line. It finds the network by itself.

Frequently asked questions
› Do I need a passport, a visa copy or an activation wait?
No. Those belong to an Indian SIM. A roaming eSIM is installed from a QR code before you fly and connects on arrival.
› Can I book trains and use Indian apps without an Indian number?
Trains, yes: IRCTC registers foreign numbers for a small fee. Apps that send a code to an Indian number only will not work with a data-only eSIM.
› Does it work in Kashmir and Ladakh?
Foreign roaming is reported to work there, unlike prepaid SIMs from other Indian states. Coverage is thin and shutdowns are frequent, so do not rely on it.
