eSIM Japan: what you get

Where your traffic comes out
Hong Kong, Japan, or Singapore, depending on the plan. Websites see you there, wherever you actually are; streaming catalogues and apps that check your location go by that address.
After the daily allowance
A Daily Unlimited pass slows to 384 Kbps, 512 Kbps, or 1 Mbps until the next day. It is never cut off. How daily passes work
Top-ups
Add data to the same eSIM later, with no new QR code. A Daily Unlimited pass is bought for its full number of days and cannot be extended.
Buying ahead
Install any time within 180 days of purchase. For most plans the days start counting on the first connection at the destination, not at checkout.
Calls and SMS
Data only, with no phone number. Call over a messenger; a service that verifies you by SMS cannot reach this eSIM.

Japan: data without a Japanese number

Almost everything sold to a visitor in Japan is data-only — a voice number needs residency paperwork — so a data eSIM is not a compromise here, it is the normal way to travel. Trains, maps and translation are what the phone is for, and none of them needs a Japanese number: Google Maps gives platform numbers and transfer times, Suica lives in Apple Wallet and is topped up by card, and LINE, which shops and restaurants use for bookings, registers with the number you already have.

Coverage is close to total where people live and thinner where they do not. In the Japanese Alps, rural Hokkaido and Okinawa's outer islands, NTT docomo and au reach further than the others; the table above lists the networks this eSIM uses. Expect gaps on hiking trails and in long tunnels on any of them. Free Wi-Fi exists in stations and on the shinkansen, but it drops in tunnels and asks you to sign in again each time — fine for a message, not for navigation.

The alternative travellers compare is a pocket Wi-Fi router, at roughly ¥1,000–2,000 a day plus a pickup and a return at the airport, and one more battery to charge. An eSIM is installed before the flight and needs neither.

Which plan for which trip

Messengers and maps are light. Video, calls and a laptop on a hotspot are what use data up.

How to install it

  1. 01

    Check your phone

It has to take an eSIM and must not be locked to a carrier. Does your phone support eSIM?

  2. 02

    Scan the QR code

After payment the QR code is on your order page. Scan it in the phone's settings — at home, over Wi-Fi.

  3. 03

Switch it on when you land

Turn on data roaming for the esimker line. It finds the network by itself.

Frequently asked questions

› Can I make calls in Japan with this eSIM?

Over WhatsApp, LINE or FaceTime, yes. There is no Japanese number, which is normal for visitor plans.

› Will Suica and train apps work?

Yes. Suica in Apple Wallet and route search in Google Maps need a data connection, not a Japanese number.

› Is it enough outside the cities?

In towns and along the rail lines, yes. On mountain trails and small islands the signal can disappear on any network.
