- Where your traffic comes out
- Malaysia or Singapore, depending on the plan. Websites see you there, wherever you actually are; streaming catalogues and apps that check your location go by that address.
- After the daily allowance
- A Daily Unlimited pass slows to 384 Kbps, 512 Kbps, or 1 Mbps until the next day. It is never cut off. How daily passes work
- Top-ups
- Most packages can be topped up — the plan card says which. A Daily Unlimited pass is bought for its full number of days and cannot be extended.
- Calls and SMS
- Data only, with no phone number. Call over a messenger; a service that verifies you by SMS cannot reach this eSIM.
Malaysia: two halves of one country, and Singapore next door
Malaysia is the peninsula and, across the South China Sea, the states of Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo. It is one country with the same networks, and the plan works in both halves: Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. Singapore is not part of it. The causeway from Johor Bahru is an international border, and the plan stops on the bridge; for a trip that takes in both cities choose a plan that names both.
Coverage is excellent in the cities and along the west-coast highway, and 5G reaches about four fifths of the population. It thins where the forest begins. Taman Negara has little or none; the Cameron Highlands are fine in the towns and not on the plantation roads; on the Perhentian islands and Tioman it is patchy away from the jetties; in the interior of Borneo it follows the roads and the rivers. Download the map before you leave the coast.
A local SIM is registered against your passport at the counter, which is the queue at the airport that a roaming eSIM skips. Depending on the plan, this eSIM's traffic comes out in Malaysia or in Singapore — the table above says which. It carries data only, with no Malaysian number; Grab is the app for taxis and food, and it runs on the account you already have.
Which plan for which trip
Messengers and maps are light. Video, calls and a laptop on a hotspot are what use data up.
How to install it
- 01
Check your phone
It has to take an eSIM and must not be locked to a carrier. Does your phone support eSIM?
- 02
Scan the QR code
After payment the QR code is on your order page. Scan it in the phone's settings — at home, over Wi-Fi.
- 03
Switch it on when you land
Turn on data roaming for the esimker line. It finds the network by itself.

Frequently asked questions
› Does it work on Borneo — in Sabah and Sarawak?
Yes. They are part of Malaysia and on the same networks. In the interior the signal follows the roads and towns.
› Does it work in Singapore?
No. Singapore is another country with its own networks. For both, choose a plan that names both.
› Is there signal in Taman Negara and on the islands?
In Taman Negara expect little or none. On the Perhentians and Tioman it works near the villages and jetties and fades beyond them.
